Mason

Mission Statement : “To chase greatness with humility, to forge a legacy that inspires the next generation, and to leave every fairway, every community, and every life I touch better than I found it.”

Mason McNabb is a Class of 2028 junior golf recruit from Asheville, North Carolina, competing in regional and national tournaments with the goal of playing Division I college golf. Mason maintains a 4.58 GPA at Nesbitt Discovery Academy, trains year-round, and tracks his performance statistics, tournament results, and development as a college golf recruit.

Though only having played a very few casual rounds of golf previously, in March of 2025, Mason decided he wanted to pursue golf seriously, both as a collegiate player and beyond. He started to put in the hours and has dedicated himself to improving his game every day.

Range Time in the Rain

“I really wanted to play more golf. Fortunately, I was able to play with my dad more. Then, I made the high school team and started to play competitive golf in tournaments.”

With a busy team that practiced several days a week, Mason was feeling more at home. He still went out on the course nearly every day there wasn’t practice. He started competing in tournaments in June of 2025 after his freshman year, all the while working harder and harder every day to get his scores down and be a competitive member of the team.

“It was hard at first, competing with and against boys much older, stronger, and more experienced than I was. Knowing that I needed to build my strength as well as my game, I convinced my dad take me to the gym every day at 5:45am before school.”

Showing a level of dedication and commitment rare in teenage boys, Mason strives to be better than he was yesterday, as a golfer, as a teammate, and as a person.

Exploring His Heritage

St. Andrews, Scotland Before March of 2025, Mason had only played a few rounds of casual golf with his dad. In 2023, a rare treat for any golfer presented itself, especially an American only 13 years old: Mason had the opportunity to play 18 at the birthplace of golf. As early as the 1400s, golf was played in St. Andrews, and in the year 1552 Archbishop Hamilton signed an official charter granting the right of the people of St. Andrews to play golf on the Links. Mason found the course to be deceptively difficult, with ultra-thick grass lining the fairways that swallowed up balls. He has 8 lost balls to prove it!

In addition to golf, Mason enjoys time with his family (and cat, Angus), playing violin, building with Lego, gaming, and many other hobbies typical of a high schooler. He excels at math and engineering and maintains a 4.5 gpa at an application-based STEM high school.
